In a significant development, 250 Muslims belonging to 40 families converted to Hinduism on May 8 in Hisar district of Haryana, according to a report in Times of India.
Those who converted claimed they were originally Hindus and belonged to Doom caste. One of the new converts claimed that his ancestors had converted to Islam during the Mughal rule of Aurangzeb.
They also pointed out that they were following Hindu rituals in their daily lives, except burial for last rites, for a long time. On May 8, they gave up even this practice of burying their deads and cremated 80-year-old Phoola Devi according to Hindu rituals as per her wish.

After that, they all declared themselves to be Hindus. They made it clear that there was no pressure on them for conversion.
On April 18, 35 members of 6 Muslims had also converted to Hinduism at Jind’s Danoda Kalan village.
However, Haryana State President of Muslims Welfare Organisation Harfool Khan Bhatti said that the families of Danoda Kalan converted to Hinduism with an eye on availing caste-based reservations. He pointed out that the Doom caste falls under the SC category but Muslims and Christians belonging to Doom caste can’t avail reservation under 1951 notification.
