Tablighi Jamaat should be banned for 'cruelty against humanity': Taslima Nasreen

Exiled Bangladeshi author has asked the Government of India to ban the Tablighi Jamaat that has emerged as the super spreader of coronavirus in India in the last couple of days.

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Taslima accused the jamaat of spreading ignorance and fundamentalism for a century, adding it should be banned for ‘cruelty against humanity’.

“So many people have to be infected and be dead because of the callousness of Tablighi jamaat. This organization has been spreading ignorance & fundamentalism for a century. Tablighi Jamaat should be banned for cruelty against humanity,” Taslima Nasreen tweeted.

On Friday, the Union Health Ministry had revealed that at least 647 COVID-19 positive cases found in 14 states in the last two days were linked to the Tablighi Jamaat event held at Nizamuddin Markaz in New Delhi early last month.

The data suggests that around 60% of new COVID-19 cases across the country confirmed on 1-3 April were linked to the Tablighi Jamaat event at Nizamuddin Markaz in New Delhi. The total number of new cases in this period stood at 1,162.

A total of 2,301 cases were confirmed across India by Friday. On Saturday, the total number of confirmed cases increased by 525 and reached 3072 with 75 deaths. In Tamil Nadu, 74 new cases were confirmed on Saturday out of which 73 were linked to Tablighi Jamat event.

In her earlier tweets, Taslima Nasreen called Tablighi Jamaat an “Islamic fundamentalist movement” and questioned the government’s decision to give visa to members of Tablighi Jamat especially when it was widely published that two-third of Malaysia’s confirmed COVID19 cases were linked to the group.
