Veteran politician and Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy is well-known for his blunt and straightforward statements. However, he made a cryptic but very interesting remark on Tuesday wherein he advised those holding the reins of power to guard against people who are “Manthara and Shakuni types”.
Taking to microblogging site Twitter, Swamy said that after watching Ramayana and Mahabharat serials on national broadcaster Doordarshan, he drew the lesson that the rulers should not allow people like Manthara (a character in Ramayana) and Shakuni (a character in Mahabharata) to call the shots.

“Watching Ramayana on DD and much earlier having watched Mahabharata, the lesson I draw is for those in power should ensure Manthara / Shakuni types don’t call the shots,” Swamy tweeted.
Swami’s remarks pushed Twitteratis into a discussion over whether it was purely in the context of the events of Ramayana and Mahabharat or was a message to present-day rulers as well.
